•    Where Do You Play Backgammon?

The ancient game of Backgammon offers fun and challenge for all ages.  In today’s Internet-connected world, there are more ways to play than ever before!

Backgammon is a fast-pace social game, suitable for small groups or large parties.  We may play “live” in-person over-the-board games at home with family and friends, or at clubs or other meeting places.  There are also many online places to play, with plenty of people looking to play.

Some online sites are “live play” sites, where you are matched up with another player at a virtual “table” to play.  The computer rolls the dice for you, and you enter your move.  The computer then rolls for the opponent, who takes their turn, until you finish the game or match.

Other sites are “turn based” sites.  Although you do play against a real player, the game is not “live”.  Instead, you get to make your move, and then the game moves to your opponent’s Inbox, where it waits for them to come online and play their move.  Once they make their move, the game then shows back up on your side, ready for you to make another move.

Each site has its own advantages.  On a “live” site, you get to play a whole game in one sitting, just as you would with a real over-the-board game.  But you must have enough time available to sit down and play the entire game in one sitting.  On a turn-based site, you can have several games in play with different opponents, and you can make a quick move when you have a few moments to spare.  But these games may take days, weeks or longer to complete.

So each venue — in-person, “live” online and “turn-based” online sites — has its own advantages to offer.  So, where do YOU play Backgammon?

    • Hi Clay,

Live, I usually play my friend Sam at his house. Sometimes I play at work at lunch time.

I mostly play on msn.com. 5 point matches with random opponents of similar strength. I love the interface.

      I don’t play on any turn-based sites.

    • Hello Joel!

Welcome to our new site! I mostly play on DailyGammon.com, a turn-based site with a twist. It “predicts” your opponent’s next move, and then asks you what you would do next, often playing several “turns” at a time. For me, it is a nice compromise between single-turn sites and live-play sites. And they have lots of tournaments that you can join.

If anyone wants to look for me there, my User ID is “Clay”.

      Thanks for visiting us!

    • I have an ID on DailyGammon but have never played. My username is “Moves”. Why don’t you set up a 5 point match to show me the ropes.

    • Oops, it’s actually “joelberryhill”.

    • Ok, got it. I sent you an invitation.

    • With all this hot weather we have been having, the evenings are quite balmy and comfortable for playing outside. This week, Joel and I met up for live play at the UCI Marketplace shopping center. In the middle of the Center, there is an open Commons area with lots of tables and chairs. Most of the tables have umbrellas, but some don’t, making them perfect for setting up a game. Our table was even right under a light, so as the sun set, we still had plenty of light to play. If you are hungry, there are plenty of places around to get a bite to eat or a cup of coffee.
If you are looking for a venue to play outside on a warm evening, I highly recommend this spot!
